Sedan Car Insurance

While many car buyers who buy a sedan automatically assume that, since it’s not a sports car, their insurance rates are automatically going to be incredibly low, this is simply not always the case. It’s true that, in general, sedans are the least expensive cars to insure. Without doing your homework, by finding the cheapest deal with the most coverage, you can still end up paying up to $300/month for car insurance on your sedan.

One of the first things to do is to shop around at the various auto insurance companies’ websites, to get the lowest quote on a premium. While each company will vary slightly based on factors such as state of residence, age, driving record, etc., there are some that are known for being relatively inexpensive for sedan insurance. If you’re a New Jersey or Illinois resident, you can pretty much forget about cheap car insurance no matter what. Even if it’s a 1.7-liter family sedan that you drive, you’ll still end up paying more than you want for insurance. Esurance and Allstate have teamed up and seem to generally offer the lowest insurance for sedans. Geico seems to be hit or miss, depending on the aforementioned factors, while State Farm can offer incredibly low premiums on sedans, if you bundle policies. AARP is, by far, the cheapest coverage for drivers over the age of 50, while offering decent coverage.

Many car insurance companies also offer discounts for drivers who rack up low yearly miles on their respective vehicles. Other discounts are typically offered for good driving records, good grades (students), and installing security features like a tracking system. For cars that come off the assembly line with features like antilock brakes, stability control, knee and side-curtain airbags, rearview park-assist cameras and excellent crash test scores will also generally offer cheaper insurance premiums. Automatic transmissions are also notably cheaper to insure that their manual counterparts. Consumers shouldn’t settle on the first – or even second – insurance company they talk to or get a quote from. Remember, these companies are a business and want you as a customer badly. If you are patient and show certain companies quotes you got from other insurance companies, they will likely work with you on finding discounts to bring your premium down to a level you can all agree on.
